Almost all of
what I know of the family history of my Wilson ancestors comes from
what my mother told me, supplemented by census information and the
Mormons' International Genealogical Index; but one key clue came from
the fact that my great-grandfather was a Metropolitan police officer -
the Public Record Office at Kew holds the certificate of his discharge
to pension, which recorded the date and place of his birth - as well as
the fact that he left the police for a time to serve in the Crimean
War. If I ever get the time and patience to decipher the microfilms of
the list of those awarded the Crimea Medal, I might be able to work out
what regiment he served with.
